The 2023 update to EN 1990 summarised

The 2023 update to BS EN 1990, which is the basis of structural and geotechnical design, includes several significant changes and enhancements over the previous version from 2002. Here are some of the key updates. Do be aware, though, that first generation Eurocodes still maintain precedence over the newer, second generation documents, as of May 2024.

  1. Robustness and Safety: The new version has strengthened requirements for the robustness of structures, aiming to improve their ability to withstand unexpected events without disproportionate collapse.
  2. Scope and Application: It broadens the scope to include more specific guidance on the design and assessment of existing structures, the design of repairs and alterations, and the consideration of changes in the use of structures. This makes it more comprehensive in addressing a wider range of structural and geotechnical design scenarios.
  3. Design Principles: There is an emphasis on the limit state design principles, and the partial factor method remains the primary verification method. However, the updated document also offers guidance on using alternative methods where appropriate.
  4. Material and Action Integration: The document has been updated to ensure better integration with other Eurocodes covering various materials and actions, from concrete and steel to more specialized materials like fiber-reinforced polymers and structural glass.
  5. Serviceability and Durability: Enhanced focus on serviceability and durability, ensuring that structures not only meet immediate safety requirements but also maintain their performance over time under expected use and environmental conditions.
  6. Geotechnical Design: Specific updates have been made to better align structural and geotechnical design principles, reflecting the latest advancements and research in the field.
